We’re excited to share some major updates to the Docker Model Runner community, all focused on making it more powerful, accessible, and open than ever. Our goal is to make it easier than ever for you to not only use the Docker Model Runner, but also to contribute, collaborate, and help shape the future of running AI models with Docker.
Building a Better Product Because of the Community
When we first announced Docker Model Runner, it was in its beta phase, exclusively available on Docker Desktop. The community immediately requested the ability to run AI models anywhere the Docker Engine can run. Today, we’re proud to say that Docker Model Runner is now Generally Available (GA) and can be used in all environments Docker can run!
Docker Model Runner was initially limited to Apple and Nvidia hardware. Based on community feedback, we’ve added Vulkan support, which means you can now run your models on virtually any GPU. This is a huge leap forward in making AI models even more accessible, and it’s all thanks to the incredible potential we see in this project and the community that surrounds it.
Making the OSS Experience Better
We’ve listened to your feedback about the contribution process, and we’ve made some significant changes to make it as smooth as possible.
- Simplified repository structure: we’ve consolidated all the repositories into a single, unified home at https://github.com/docker/model-runner.
- Improved contributor docs: Updated guides walk you through the setup, contribution workflows, and best practices. Whether you’re a seasoned open-source veteran or a first-time contributor, you’ll find the information you need to get started.
These changes are part of our commitment to making the OSS project not only easier to use but also easier to grow.
How You Can Get Involved
The strength of Docker Model Runner lies in its community and there’s always room to grow. We need your help to make this project the best it can be. To get involved, you can:
- Star the repository: Show your support and help us gain visibility by starring the Docker Model Runner repo.
- Contribute your ideas: Have an idea for a new feature or a bug fix? Create an issue to discuss it. Or fork the repository, make your changes, and submit a pull request. We’re excited to see what ideas you have!
