Docker Selected as a Gartner Cool Vendor in DevOps

Apr 27 2015

Docker is pleased to have been included in Gartner’s latest “Cool Vendors in DevOps, 2015“report, published April 21. In the Gartner-cool-vendor report, Gartner notes: “As virtualization and cloud applications grow beyond being single images run on premise to being comprised of multiple tiers that can be run and scaled in a hybrid cloud, new approaches are needed to reduce complexity.”

Docker is focused on reducing the complexities of building, shipping and running distributed applications, whether deployed on prem or in the cloud. We blieve our inclusion in the report reflects the progress that we’ve made over the last year to develop the tools and technologies that increase productivity for development and operations teams alike  – at every phase of the distributed application lifecycle.

Increasingly, customers have used Docker’s platform to make their continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines more efficient, which results in much faster enhancements to applications and more reliable code. As an example, ING, one of the top ten financial services companies in the world,  was struggling to make application changes across an organization comprised of hundreds of different groups using disparate processes and technologies. ING used Docker to improve their CD pipeline, accelerating the provisioning of build servers, provisioning and publishing of tests, deployment automation, and functional integration testing across more than 180 DevOps teams. The result was a 50% cost savings in infrastructure resource consumption by deploying a highly automated CD pipeline.

We feel Gartner’s recognition of Docker as a “Cool Vendor” is a testament to how customers are already using Docker in the CI/CD environments. With Docker, companies not only create agile application environments, they are also enabling more agile organizations.

Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings or other designation.
