This year’s summit reflected what is top of mind for government organizations, namely IT modernization and what that means for infrastructure, applications, data and the workforce. As mentioned in the keynote address, the line between government IT and private sector IT is blurring now more than ever. From the priorities outlined in the White House IT Modernization Report to the discussions at the recent IT modernization summit, the themes focus on results of better customer service and better stewardship of tax dollars. Better customer service translates into improving existing services, delivering new services and increasing transparency. To that end, government organizations are taking…

Recently we released a new version of Docker Enterprise Edition featuring expansion of the multi-architecture capabilities from Linux to Windows Server and now the IBM Z mainframe platform. Enterprise IT architecture is complex and diverse and include workloads across different server hardware types and operating systems. Docker and IBM have partnered together to deliver the support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for IBM Z (x390x) systems as certified infrastructure for Docker Enterprise Edition (EE). This first release features support for the the IBM Z product family. Why bring Docker containers and mainframe systems together? Enterprises…

Existing applications and infrastructure account for the majority of IT spend in maintenance and support. Docker and Booz Allen Hamilton are partnering together to help Federal agencies modernize traditional apps with Docker Enterprise Edition (EE), deploy onto modern infrastructure to save infrastructure and operational costs, increase security and gain workload portability. This program helps accelerate the path to modern microservices and infrastructure with containers: First by containerizing the app in place and using container architecture to break up the app into smaller services over time The full stack portability provided by Docker EE allows for workload consolidation for greater app…

Docker Datacenter customer, Shawn Bower of Cornell University recently shared their experiences in containerizing Confluence as being the start of their Docker journey. Through that project they were able to demonstrate a 10X savings in application maintenance, reduce the time to build a disaster recovery plan from days to 30 minutes and improve the security profile of their Confluence deployment. This change allowed the Cloudification team that Shawn leads to start spending the majority of their time helping Cornelians to use technology to be innovative. Since the original blog was posted, there’s been a lot of requests to get the pragmatic info…

This is a guest post by Shawn Bower In my role as Cloud Architect I often hear, “Docker sounds great but it won’t work for my application.”  In my experience Docker can improve the state of many applications including legacy and vendor solutions.  The first production workload at Cornell on Docker was the University’s wiki which is run on Atlassian’s Confluence in April 2015. Our installation of Confluence is an interesting intersection of legacy and vendor solution.  We have customized the code, to work with our single sign on solution, as well as a custom synchronization with LDAP for group…
