MetLife Transforms the Customer Experience with a Legacy and Microservices Mashup

Challenges

MetLife offers auto, home, dental, life, disability, vision, and health insurance to over 100 million customers across 50 countries. Their business relies on information – about policyholders, risk assessments, financial and market data, etc. Aaron Ades, AVP of Solutions Engineering at MetLife offers that they’ve been in the information management business for 150 years and have accumulated over 400 systems of record – some apps are over 30 years old. The challenge for MetLife is that they still have a lot of legacy technology that they must work with. Aaron shared that there is still code running today that was first written in 1982, but they still need to deliver a modern experience on top of those legacy systems.


Solution

MetLife chose Docker Enterprise Edition and Microsoft Azure to transform and deliver a new holistic customer experience. Docker EE provided a secure container platform to develop and manage the new microservices application built with modern and open source components to "wrap" the decades worth of legacy systems. Once modernized, the new application was able to tap into these systems of record to access the data and serve it up to both customers and agents alike in a single online experience. The portability efficiency of Docker built applications allowed MetLife to achieve a 70% consolidation on infrastructure while gaining operational scale through cloud infrastructure. The application can be easily deployed anywhere around the world on-premises or in the cloud - consistently, efficiently and securely.
